What size metal garage do I need?
Start with what you will park, add room to open doors and walk around, then pick a leg height that clears your tallest vehicle.
1. Measure what goes inside
Measure the length and width of every vehicle, trailer and machine you plan to store, with mirrors out. Check the owner's manual or a tape measure rather than guessing, because a crew cab pickup and a compact car are very different sizes.
2. Add working room
Leave room to open doors fully on each side, walk around the front and back, and get past with a mower or a toolbox. If you want a workbench, shelves or a freezer, add that wall space too. Most people who regret their size wish they had gone bigger, so measure your stuff and then think about what you might add later.
3. Pick width and length
On a United Metal Buildings garage, the size reads width x length x leg height. The models on our site include sizes like 12x25, 18x25, 20x30, 24x30, 26x40, 30x40 and 30x60. Wider buildings fit more vehicles side by side; longer buildings fit trailers or a shop area behind the parking.
4. Pick leg height and doors
Leg height sets how tall your side walls are, and that limits how tall the doors can be. A pickup with a topper or rack, a tractor with a cab, a boat on a trailer or a camper needs more height than a car. RV ports on our site start at 12 foot legs. Measure your tallest vehicle and add clearance.
5. Think about snow
For Minnesota and the Dakotas, a vertical roof sheds snow best. If you need a permit, ask for drawings rated for your local snow and wind loads. See site prep for the base.
