Planning for snow and frost
Snow load. The snow a roof has to carry is set by your local building code, and it changes from place to place. In the Upper Midwest the design snow load generally gets higher as you go north. If your county or city requires a permit, ask for a building with engineered drawings rated for the snow and wind loads at your address before you order. We can tell you what is available for your site.
Roof style. On metal buildings, a vertical roof (panels run from the peak down to the eave) sheds snow and rain better than a horizontal roof. It is the usual choice where winters are long.
Frost. Frost heave can lift and shift anything that is not set below the frost line or on a well-drained base. Footings and slabs for permanent buildings follow local code. Portable buildings sit on a level, compacted, well-drained gravel pad so water does not collect and freeze under the floor.
Heavy snow in the north. Northern Wisconsin, especially near Lake Superior, gets some of the heaviest snow in the Midwest. A vertical roof and a building rated for your local snow load matter more there. Your county sets permit and footing rules.
This is general planning information, not engineering or code advice. Your local building department has the final say on permits, setbacks, snow and wind loads, and footing depth.
