Planning for snow and frost
Snow load. The snow a roof has to carry is set by your local building code, and it changes from place to place. Design snow loads generally get higher as you go north and as elevation rises. If your county or city requires a permit, ask for a building with engineered drawings rated for the snow and wind loads at your address before you order. We can tell you what is available for your site.
Roof style. On metal buildings, a vertical roof (panels run from the peak down to the eave) sheds snow and rain better than a horizontal roof. It is the usual choice where winters are long.
Frost. Frost heave can lift and shift anything that is not set below the frost line or on a well-drained base. Footings and slabs for permanent buildings follow local code. Portable buildings sit on a level, compacted, well-drained gravel pad so water does not collect and freeze under the floor.
North to south. Illinois runs a long way north to south, so snow loads and frost depth near Rockford are not the same as near Carbondale. Your county or city sets the numbers for permits and footings.
This is general planning information, not engineering or code advice. Your local building department has the final say on permits, setbacks, snow and wind loads, and footing depth.
